Inside Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz’s Dreamland House
Most of us will never walk through these doors, but today we have the chance to take a peek inside. In this Home Signature, step inside one of California’s most extraordinary homes, perched on the cliffs of La Jolla, overlooking the ocean. Originally built in 2007 by renowned architect Wallace E. Cunningham, the property spans nearly 11,000 square feet. Known by many names, such as the Razor House, due to its shape, or Iron Man House for being the inspiration behind the Tony Stark mansion in the films. Looking from the outside, this residence feels more like a futuristic sculpture than a family home. But that feeling changes completely when we step inside Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz’s Dreamland House, as they call it.
The designer Behind this project was Kelly Behun, chosen by Beatz, who believed she could bring something that many luxury homes lack: soul. Rather than compete with the architecture, Behun softened it. She introduced warm woods, Moroccan wool rugs, tactile fabrics, and a palette inspired by the surrounding landscape. Shades of caramel, sand, and cognac balance the home’s industrial character, creating interiors that feel welcoming despite their monumental scale.
The result is a home where contemporary design, world-class art, and everyday family life coexist beautifully.
Dreamland: A House Filled With Art
Art sits at the center of Dreamland.
Over two decades, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz have assembled an impressive collection of more than 1,000 works. Their focus on African American and African artists has transformed the home into a private gallery featuring pieces by Kehinde Wiley, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Barkley L. Hendricks, Henry Taylor, and many others.
The couple also owns what is considered the largest private collection of photographs by Gordon Parks, further reflecting their passion for storytelling and cultural preservation.
Throughout the home, artwork never feels staged. Instead, each piece becomes part of the family’s daily life.

The Primary Bedroom
The primary bedroom offers a quieter, more intimate atmosphere.
While the architecture remains dramatic, the furnishings introduce softness and comfort. A pair of 1940s Sven Staaf chairs upholstered in luxurious shearling sits beside a custom oak-and-stone mosaic side table designed by Kelly Behun Studio.
Natural materials, warm textures, and subtle tones create a peaceful environment that contrasts with the home’s glass-and-concrete structure. The room feels less like a showcase and more like a sanctuary suspended above the ocean.

The Library and Piano Room
Among the home’s most personal spaces is the library and music room.
At its center sits Alicia Keys’ very first piano, gifted to her by the record label that signed her when she was only sixteen years old. Today, the instrument remains an important part of family life, with her son Egypt also spending time playing it.
This room deliberately contrasts with the home’s famous “Iron Man” aesthetic. Warm colors, layered rugs, ceramics, books, and collected objects create an atmosphere that feels intimate and lived-in.
Two striking works by artist Toyin Ojih Odutola overlook the space. A custom sectional upholstered in soft Dedar chenille, José Zanine Caldas chairs, oak-and-travertine cocktail tables, and natural fiber rugs by Marc Philips, complete the room’s inviting character.
Every detail encourages conversation, creativity, and reflection.

The Family Room
The family room serves as one of the busiest spaces in the house.
This is where holiday gatherings unfold, movies play at full volume, and family memories are made. A monumental artwork by Derrick Adams dominates one wall, representing the family’s spirit.
Additional works by Jordan Casteel add layers of visual interest, while cutting-edge Bang & Olufsen technology ensures the room functions as an entertainment hub, showing Dean’s passion for high-end technology.
A plush tufted sectional upholstered in velvet wraps around a sculptural Mauro Mori cocktail table carved from a massive Albizia tree trunk. Beneath it, a custom Moroccan wool rug adds warmth and texture.
Despite its museum-worthy art collection, the room feels relaxed and welcoming.
The Dining Room
The dining room ranks among the couple’s favorite spaces.
Here, the family gathers for meals, board games, conversations, and quiet evenings together. The room balances elegance and comfort through custom furnishings and carefully selected materials.
A Toyin Ojih Odutola artwork anchors the space, while a custom oak dining table designed by Kelly Behun Studio takes center stage. Cerused-oak dining chairs upholstered in shearling surround the table, creating a setting that feels sophisticated without becoming formal.
Natural textures and understated finishes allow the spectacular ocean views to remain the true focal point.
The Circular Living Room
One of Dreamland’s most recognizable spaces is the circular living room.
The curved architecture creates an immersive experience, drawing attention toward both the panoramic views and the carefully curated furnishings within.
Three custom sofas by Mathieu Lehanneur surround a sculptural cocktail table by Malgorzata Bany. Ceramic side tables by Jonathan Cross, BZippy, and Floris Wubben add artistic character, while a vintage Ngombe reclining chair introduces a layer of cultural history.
A silk rug softens the space beneath, while special-edition Bang & Olufsen Beolab 90 speakers seamlessly blend luxury technology with design.
The room captures everything Dreamland represents: architecture, art, comfort, and innovation existing in perfect harmony.

The Grown-Up Floor
Hidden beneath the main residence lies one of Beatz’s favourite areas.
He refuses to call it a man cave.
Instead, he and Alicia refer to it as “the grown-up floor”, a shared retreat that reflects their personalities just as much as the spaces upstairs.
The subterranean garage and adjoining lounge house an extraordinary collection of luxury automobiles, including a Ferrari Enzo, Ferrari LaFerrari, and Ferrari SF90. Yet the space offers much more than a showcase for exotic cars.
A recording studio allows creativity to continue long after the rest of the house falls quiet. Photographs by Kwame Brathwaite and Deana Lawson transform the garage into another gallery-like environment.
Swizz often spends time here listening to classic 1970s R&B, smoking cigars, or skating through the space on quad skates.

Many celebrity homes impress through size alone. Dreamland succeeds for a different reason.
It’s easy to focus on the dramatic architecture, the cliffside views, or the impressive art collection. Yet what makes Dreamland memorable is how personal it feels. Behind the glass walls and futuristic curves is a home built around family, music, and creativity, exactly what Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz set out to create.
Dreamland may have inspired a superhero’s home, but today it reflects something far more meaningful: a place built around family, creativity, and connection.
