Preserving the Character of a Historic Home
Located in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, the home was originally designed in 1930 by architect Arthur Kelly, best known for several iconic Southern California residences. While the property had remained largely untouched for decades, Benson saw an opportunity to preserve its architectural identity while adapting it for modern living.
Instead of starting from scratch, the renovation respected the home’s original Spanish Revival architecture, carefully maintaining its historic character while introducing open, functional spaces designed for contemporary lifestyles.

One of the home’s most memorable features is its hidden speakeasy.
Former staff quarters and an underground wine cellar were transformed into a moody entertaining space inspired by Paris’s legendary Hotel Costes. Burgundy walls, floral wallpaper, velvet seating, and dramatic lighting create an intimate atmosphere unlike any other room in the house.
Elsewhere, playful touches appear throughout the residence—from Gucci wallpaper in the powder room to a secret laundry room concealed behind a hidden door covered in retro space-themed wallpaper.

Inspired by luxury resorts in Cabo San Lucas, the pool area was redesigned to encourage relaxation and entertaining. The original split-level landscape was reconfigured into a more open environment featuring generous lounge areas, landscaped lawns, and elegant blue tile finishes reminiscent of Mediterranean resorts.
